SYLVA, N.C. – Phillip Latter of Bryson City and Angie Frederick of Cullowhee were the winners of the 13th Annual Smoky Streak 10K held Oct. 1 in Sylva.
Approximately 230 people participated in the event, which also included a 5K run and 5K walk. The Smoky Streak was presented by MedWest-Harris and MedWest-Swain hospitals, the Foundation of MedWest-Harris and MedWest-Swain, and the Jackson County Health Department.
The event raised more than $5,000 to fund mammograms for qualifying women in Jackson and Swain counties who are underserved and may not be able to afford the important screening.
“Over 50 cases of breast cancer will be diagnosed in Jackson and Swain counties this year. Our goal is to reduce or illuminate reported cases in our service area,” said Steve Brown, executive director of the MedWest Foundations.
Winners of the Smoky Streak 5K race were Frank Cline and Shawnda Martin. Visit www.medwesthealth.org/smoky_streak.aspx for the complete list of winners.
The Smoky Stream is a part of MedWest Health System’s month-long Fall Fight breast cancer awareness campaign. Visit the Fall Fight section of www.medwesthealth.org to learn more about other events, including the Power of Pink race event Oct. 29 at MedWest-Haywood.
