MedWest-Harris and Swain recognize department managers for high staff engagement among their teams
Sylva, N.C. – Janet Millsaps, Director of Service Innovation and Performance Management, presented awards for high staff engagement to WestCare department managers at the recent WestCare Board meeting, held on Tuesday, January 8 at MedWest-Harris. A total of 28 managers were given the esteemed recognition, which indicates a high level of engagement among employees, most of whom are directly involved in patient care.
As part of quality and regulatory standards, all work units that consist of five or more WestCare employees are assigned to a performance-based tier which reflects the degree of commitment of employees within the work unit. Within the three-tier scale, tier one reflects the highest commitment scores and requires the least amount of action planning on the part of the department.

“This is a significant achievement with regard to departmental leadership,” Millsaps said. “These scores are also indicative of a strong relationship between staff and management that involves trust, teamwork and a commitment to the patients and families they serve.”
The tier assignments are based on a core employee survey which includes questions that reflect degrees of commitment in the work unit. Departments are evaluated by a careful measurement of scores from the core survey, and assigned to a tier accordingly.
