MedWest Physician Network welcomes Dr. James Smallwood

SYLVA, N.C. – Dr. James Clay Smallwood will join the MedWest Physician Network in 2012, with a practice in Sylva focusing exclusively on gynecology. 

Dr. Smallwood has practiced in Western North Carolina for years and previously was on the medical staff of the WestCare Health System, providing obstetric and gynecological care. Prior to joining the MedWest Physician Network, Dr. Smallwood was affiliated with Highlands-Cashiers Hospital in Highlands. 

"I am excited to be back in the MedWest community of physicians and health care providers to offer gynecologic services to the women of western North Carolina. I will focus on wellness, preventive care, and minimally invasive procedures for women of all ages," said Dr. Smallwood.  

Dr. Smallwood will begin seeing patients in February, with an office located on the third floor of Harris Medical Park in Sylva. 

"We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Smallwood back to the medical staff of MedWest-Harris. He has a stellar reputation and has served the patients of our region for many years. We look forward to our partnership as we continue to expand access to care in our local community," said Steve Heatherly, CEO of the MedWest Physician Network. 

Dr. Smallwood's practice will bring the total number of practices in the MedWest Physician Network to 18, with nearly 100 providers in Jackson, Haywood, Swain and Macon counties. 

Dr. Smallwood is a member of the teaching staff of the Mountain Area Health Education Center in Asheville and earned his medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta. 

He completed his internship and residency in obstetrics and gynecology at the United States Air Force Medical Center at Keesler Air Force Base in Mississippi. He is certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology, is accredited in Advanced Laparoscopy by the Accreditation Council for Gynecologic Endoscopy and is a Fellow of the American Board of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.
